Project description

Late Oligocene (~25 Ma) deposits from the Namba Formation in the area southeast of Lake Frome have produced an array of vertebrate fossils that help us to understand the evolution of modern vertebrate groups in Australia, as well as providing a window into the bizarre animals around when forests covered much of inland Australia. Recent projects have focused on describing the vertebrate fauna but very little has been done in terms of mapping the surface exposures with a view to finding new fossil sites. This project involves working with existing cores and drilling logs to map the distribution of key fossil-bearing layers of the Namba Formation. It will provide a better understanding of the depositional environment, the extent of fossil-bearing sediments and will potentially identify new prospective areas.

Assumed knowledge

Basic GIS knowledge essential, geology and/or palaeontology useful.

Note: You need to register interest in projects from different supervisors (not a number of projects with the one supervisor).
You must also contact each supervisor directly to discuss both the project details and your suitability to undertake the project.
