Project description

Statistical designs were initiated by Ronald A. Fisher (buried in St Peters Cathedral, Adelaide) as a way of producing good stats when doing experiments (e.g. about crops in the field). It was taken up in a big way by Raj Chandra Bose who developed it. This project will study block designs, and also the combinatorial problems and ideas associated with them, such as Hadamard matrices, which are n by n orthogonal matrices made up only of plus or minus one's. Do these exist for all n = 4m? No-one knows. Another problem: do there exist 6 mutually orthogonal Latin squares of order 12?

Further information

Raj Chandra Bose

Assumed knowledge

Algebra (sorting letters and balancing); geometry (intuition about space); combinatorics (some counting ability)

Note: You need to register interest in projects from different supervisors (not a number of projects with the one supervisor).
You must also contact each supervisor directly to discuss both the project details and your suitability to undertake the project.
