Project description
The algal bloom currently occurring off the coast of South Australia is an example of the devastating impacts of toxic algal blooms. Detection of not only the algae themselves but the toxins and the levels present is desirable. Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy is one method of chemically profiling analytes at very low concentrations rapidly. This project is a collaboration with the Chalker research group to develop a new method of forming SERS substrates from e-waste. The developed substrates will then be evaluated for their ability to detect and quantify low levels of model algal toxins.
