Project description
Bioamendments can help plants tolerate abiotic stress. One such amendment is GABA and its role as as a metabolite and stress signal in plants has been well documented. GABA could be applied by a grower at seeding when it is known that they are dry sowing the crop (due to a lack of opening rain or due to farm seeding logistic requirements) and could be applied in season when there is no forecasted rain during Spring (such as events in 2024 and 2025) or as soil moisture declines (which can be monitored with soil moisture sensors or when plants start showing moisture stress). In this project, different concentrations of GABA will be applied to evaluate the early vigour of two dry sown wheat varieties in controlled greenhouse conditions using two soil types. Measurements for all treatments at 8 weeks following sowing include: Shoot and root biomass; Length of first internode; Number of tillers; SPAD (chlorophyll) of the youngest emerged blade.
Note: You need to register interest in projects from different supervisors (not a number of projects with the one supervisor).
You must also contact each supervisor directly to discuss both the project details and your suitability to undertake the project.
