Project description

Supercapacitors can conduct large currents / pulsed power inputs for short durations and store energy. The application of SCs for braking energy recovery provides potential to recover high pulse power inputs and reuse the energy thereby improving efficiency of electric transportation. This project aims to design and analyze an electromagnetic device for braking energy recovery. The project will involve literature review search with publications and patents. A new concept will be developed and analyzed using electromagnetic finite element software. On a traditional car brake system, a rotating rotor coupled to the wheel is present. On either side of the rotor two pads come into contact when the brake pedal is pushed. SC bank will have very low ESR, it can absorb a high charge current. In this project, you will develop a concept and simulate possible replacement of the mechanical brake with an electromagnetic counterpart. SCs can be used to store surge currents if they are generated during the braking period.

Note: You need to register interest in projects from different supervisors (not a number of projects with the one supervisor).
You must also contact each supervisor directly to discuss both the project details and your suitability to undertake the project.
