Project description

The aim of this project is to design and construct an isolated DC-DC battery charger capable of high power output in a small form factor. The target is for this to be capable of charging a 12V system at 800W from an input of 9-32V, with an efficiency of 90% or greater. At least 500V isolation between the input and output is desired. The charger will implement a three-stage charging approach to charge a battery quickly and efficiently – Boost (Controlled Current), Absorption (Controlled Voltage), and Float (Controlled Voltage). The final design shall fit on a single sided PCB approximately 98 x 150mm and be capable of functioning in an environment of -20 to +85 degrees Celsius. Various extensions to the project are possible, including different voltage ranges for sourcing and charging, bi-directional charging, and extended environmental ranges.

Industry involvement

Note: You need to register interest in projects from different supervisors (not a number of projects with the one supervisor).
You must also contact each supervisor directly to discuss both the project details and your suitability to undertake the project.
