Project description

This project has several fronts that explore the use of Electromyography (EMG) in human performance monitoring. The projects vary from routine to complete novel that require a high technical understanding and aptitude.
  • SENIAM 2.0. The current guidelines for recording EMG date to the late 1990’s are unclear in places and haven’t changed significantly. Technology has changed significantly since then with the advent of wireless EMG that can unleash new opportunities. This project would validate SENIAM and introduce an updated set of clear instructions for placing EMG sensors, normalising EMG, and post-processing data.
  • EMG in hard-to-reach places. There are many muscles that conventional surface EMG is incapable of accessing because of overlying tissues and structures and competing muscles. This project would explore techniques for accessing these muscles. This project is sensitive and students must assign their IP to undertake this work.
  • EMG Sensor development. Multichannel EMG is becoming more common but is still not accessible or affordable. This project will look at improved signal acquisition and interfaces with the human including fixation, sensing, number of channels, wireless communication and sampling frequency. This is an open project and can be completed in stages.
  • Intramuscular Oxygenation SmO2 is an emerging technique that can be used to measure deep stores of oxygen that have been related to fatigue. This project would explore the use of SmO2 and pursue the design and development of an SmO2 sensor and possibly integrate it with EMG.
