Project description

Main-group elements offer attractive and environmentally benign alternatives to traditionally used precious metals in redox catalysis. Yet, the chemistry of main-group elements in their (non-conventional) low oxidation states is comparatively underdeveloped. This project aims to design modular ligands for the synthesis of catalytically relevant low oxidation state main-group complexes. These ligands will be fine-tuned to alter the coordination environment at the main-group element centre and the reactivity of the overall complex. Students will gain experience in: (i) using a glovebox and Schlenk line (air and moisture sensitive manipulations), (ii) advanced characterisation techniques (NMR, SC-XRD, etc), and (iii) scientific writing and communication.

Note: You need to register interest in projects from different supervisors (not a number of projects with the one supervisor).
You must also contact each supervisor directly to discuss both the project details and your suitability to undertake the project.
