Project description

· No level of lead exposure is safe for children because it may damage neurological development, cause ADHD or lower IQ. · Port Pirie hosts world’s largest lead-zinc smelter. It’s continuous operation for over 150 years has led to significant soil contamination. · The effect of lead exposure at Port Pirie can be observed in higher than recommended blood lead levels in >50% of the children under the age of 5. · A novel soil remediation strategy ‘jarosite treatment’ may reduce lead exposure over 90%. · This strategy also reduces arsenic exposure which is present at Port Pirie as a secondary contaminant and as a primary contaminant in legacy gold mining regions. · We will further develop strategies to reduce childhood exposure to potentially   toxic elements by adapting jarosite treatment and dietary supplement strategies and ecotoxicity assays.
