Project description

The Southern Shark Ecology Group is seeking a highly motivated Honours student to join the lab for a project investigating changes in resource and habitat use across different life stages of deep-sea chondrichthyans (sharks, skates, and chimaeras) in Aotearoa New Zealand. The extent to which deep-sea chondrichthyans shift their diet throughout their life remains largely unexplored yet is imperative for accurate food web models and predator and prey biomass management. This will be a lab-based honours project that will use biochemical tools (fatty acids and stable isotopes) to investigate ontogenetic shifts in feeding ecology of co-occurring species including the Longnose Velvet Dogfish (Centroscymnus crepidater), Baxter’s Lantern Dogfish (Etmopterus granulosus), Dark Ghost Shark (Hydrolagus novaezealandiae), Pale Ghost Shark (Hydrolagus bemisi) and Shovelnose Spiny Dogfish (Deania calcea). Supervisors: Teah Burke, Lauren Meyer, Chloe Roberts, Brit Finucci Please download the project flyer for more information: Ontogenetic Diet Shifts

Note: You need to register interest in projects from different supervisors (not a number of projects with the one supervisor).
You must also contact each supervisor directly to discuss both the project details and your suitability to undertake the project.
