Project description

This project will investigate interactions between kayaks and dolphins around Garden Island (Angas Inlet) in the Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary to inform sustainable marine mammal tourism. It may also include social surveys with kayak users to investigate their knowledge of the state's legislation about interactions with marine mammals, and their experience with dolphins while on the water.

Further information

The student will have the opportunity to learn about field techniques to study cetaceans, behavioural methods to collect wildlife data, social surveys, and training in the use of UAVs (with the possibility of obtaining a remote pilot licence, with the course paid for).

Assumed knowledge

An interest in animal ecology, behaviour and wildlife management. Good communication skills, basic biostatistics knowledge, and an interest in the use of UAVs for the collection of biological data.

Industry involvement

This project will be done in collaboration with the SA Department for Environment and Water.
