Project description

Orthopaedic surgery often requires the insertion of bone screws. However over-tightening can result in micro-failure of the bone, which can lead to screw loosening or, particularly in osteoporotic bone, loss of fixation. Achieving optimal torque requires considerable surgical experience and skill, and the torque levels vary with screw design, screw material and bone quality. This project will investigate the torque profiles during screw insertion for a variety of screw designs and bone qualities. This information will inform the ongoing development of our automated torque-limiting screwdriver, which self-adapts its torque limit to bone quality.
