Project description

This project will focus on developing a digital (video game) version of an existing serious board game, designed to educate players basic concepts around environmental engineering / technology and sustainable practices by balancing energy needs with environmental concerns. Project work will involve developing a fully playable version of this game for personal computers, allowing players greater freedom to try different strategies and ideas out in their own time. Several additional tasks can then be explored within this developed game, including:
  • Running user studies to log and observe how people interact with the game's mechanics in relation to their real world experiences.
  • Developing AI agents capable of playing the game. These can be used to create a single player version of the game or improve the game's balance by identifying loopholes or exploits within the existing rules.
  • Implementing additional game mechanics and more advanced simulations that would otherwise be difficult to manage for a board game.

Assumed knowledge

Basic programming / game development skills to create a simple 2D version of a board game. This can be done in an existing game-engine (e.g., Unity) or in a native GUI programming environment (e.g., JavaFX, Swing, Tkinter, etc.)

Note: You need to register interest in projects from different supervisors (not a number of projects with the one supervisor).
You must also contact each supervisor directly to discuss both the project details and your suitability to undertake the project.
